6 Things To Do When Your Laptop Gets Wet

Getting the notebook wet is a problem that many users have encountered at one time or another. If a drink spills on the laptop when it is open, this can have a real damaging effect on the computer.

If this happens, how fast you react will determine your ability to salvage the computer. You need to act quickly to ensure that the components dry completely.

1. Shut down the computer immediately your computer comes into contact with the liquid. Leaving the power running will make the problem worse. Disconnect the notebook from the power source by pulling the cable and soak up any visible liquid using an absorbent cloth.

2. Turn the machine upside down, so that any liquid that has seeped through the keyboard can escape. The keyboard is the easiest route to get to the central components and any water that gets through can cause a lot of damage. When the notebook is upside down, you should remove the battery.

3. Use an absorbent towel to sponge the liquid from the area it is spilt, but do not wipe it vigorously or rub it in a way that could send drops of the liquid into the machine.

4. Dismantle the notebook if you know how to do it, as this will give it a better chance of surviving. Taking the casing off will allow the computer to dry faster. You can also use a blow dryer to dry the areas that are obviously wet.

5. Place the laptop aside in a warm dry area and leave it undisturbed to dry out completely. Leave it for at least 24 hours or longer depending on the amount of liquid that was on the machine. Do not try to reassemble it until it is completely dry.

6. If you are confident that all the parts are dry, reassemble the machine and turn it back on. Hopefully, the computer will be restored if it is completely dry. If you got to the machine immediately the spillage occurred, the chances of getting it to work are very high.

If these steps do not work, you can contact the manufacturer to find out if repair is possible. You can also take the machine to a technician who gets Asus notebooks refurbished. The expert may be able to salvage the machine by replacing one or two parts. If the damage is extensive or replacing the damaged parts is expensive, then you are better off buying a new laptop.
